Postkolonyal Eleştirmen Homi K. Bhabha’nın ‘Ulus ve Anlatım’ı Üzerine Notlar

Abstract

Bu makalede Hintli - İngiliz asıllı bilim adamı ve eleştirel teorisyen Homi K. Bhabha’nın “Nation & Narration” (Ulus ve Anlatım) isimli ilk kitabı tartışılıp, yorumlanacaktır. Yazar, Harvard Üniversitesi’nde Anne F. Rothenberg Beşerî Bilimler Enstitüsünde karşılaştırmalı edebiyat profesörüdür. Ayrıca çağımızın postkolonyal çalışmalarının en önemli isimlerinden biridir. Bu alanda melezlik, taklitçilik, farklılık ve kararsızlık gibi bir dizi yeni sözcük ve temel kavramları geliştirmiştir. Bu tür terimler, Bhabha’nın teorisine göre sömürgeleştirilmiş insanların sömürgecinin gücüne direnme yollarını tanımlar. Filozof 2012 yılında Hindistan hükümetinden edebiyat ve eğitim alanında Padma Bhushan ödülü almıştır. Hindistan’ın Bombay şehrinde Parisi bir ailenin çocuğu olarak doğan Bhabha, Mumbai Üniversitesi Elphinstone College’dan lisans diploması ve M. Phil. ve D. Phil yüksek lisans dereceleriyle mezun olmuştur. Oxford Üniversitesi’nde yıllarca İngiliz Edebiyatı alanında çalışmış ve öğrenciler yetiştirmiştir. Bhabha, Sussex Üniversitesi’nin İngilizce Bölümü’nde on yılı aşkın bir süre ders verdikten sonra Princeton Üniversitesi’nde çalışmaya başlamıştır. En son Harvard Üniversitesi’nde görev almıştır. Kültürel çalışmalar alanında Homi Bhabha, Althusser’in Marx yorumundan ve Gramsci’nin sosyal olarak marjinalleştirilmiş ve dışlanmış gruplar için madun kategorisiyle ilgili “kültürel hegemonya” kavramından eleştirel bir şekilde yararlanmaktadır. Onun sömürge deneyimi teorisi, Lacan odaklı psikanalize ve Foucault ile Derrida’nın dil ve söylem analizi yöntemlerine de dayanmaktadır. Derrida tarafından geliştirilen yapısöküm kavramı neredeyse tüm postkolonyal teorisyenler için merkezi öneme sahiptir. Frantz Fanon’un ırkçılık teorisindeki “Siyah Deri Beyaz Maskeler: Ezilenlerin Psikolojisi ve Yabancılaşma” ile “Yeryüzünün Lanetlileri” gibi devrimsel nitelikteki çalışmaların Bhabha’nın düşünceleri üzerinde merkezi/ kalıcı bir etkisi vardır. Daha yakın zamanlarda, Bhabha özellikle “üçüncü yer” veya “ara mekân” kavramlarını icat etmiştir. O bunu öznel evin geçici (geçici) yeri ile tarihsel evin yeri arasında tanınmayan bir düşünce mekânı - veya bir yer olmayan yer - olarak görmektedir. Ancak bu düşünce mekansızlık demekte doğru değildir. Bhabha Ulus ve Anlatım’ın önsözünde şöyle yazmaktadır: “Milletler tıpkı anlatılar gibi, kökenlerini zamanın mitlerinde kaybederler ve ufuklarıyla ancak zihnin gözünde tam olarak karşılaşırlar.” Görünüşte imkânsız olan bu metaforik başlangıçtan yola çıkan kitap, ulusluk kavramının yaşandığı şekliyle gerçekleri ve yazıldığı şekliyle dilin derin ikircikliliğiyle yüzleşmektedir.

Notes on Postcolonial Critician Homi K. Bhabha’s ‘Nation & Narration’

Abstract

This article is by Indian - British born scientist and critical theorist Homi K. Bhabha’s first book titled “Nation & Narration” will be discussed and interpreted. The writer is at Harvard University. He is a professor of comparative literature at the Anne F. Rothenberg Institute for the Humanities. He is also one of the most important figures of postcolonial studies of our time. In this field, he has developed a number of new words and basic concepts such as hybridity, mimicry, difference and ambivalence. Such terms, according to Bhabha’s theory, describe the ways in which colonized people resist the power of the colonizer. The philosopher received the Padma Bhushan award in the field of literature and education from the government of India in 2012. Born in Bombay, India to a Parisian family, Bhabha received a bachelor’s degree and an M.A. from Elphinstone College, University of Mumbai. Phil. and D. Phil graduated with a master’s degree. He has worked in the field of English Literature at the University of Oxford for many years and has trained students. Bhabha started working at Princeton University after teaching in the English Department of the University of Sussex for more than ten years. He has most recently served at Harvard University. In the field of cultural studies, Homi Bhabha makes critical use of Althusser’s Marxian interpretation and Gramsci’s concept of “cultural hegemony” related to the madun category for socially marginalized and excluded groups. His theory of the colonial experience is also based on Lacanian-oriented psychoanalysis and the methods of language and discourse analysis of Foucault and Derrida. The concept of deconstruction developed by Derrida is of central importance for almost all postcolonial theorists. Revolutionary works in Frantz Fanon’s theory of racism, such as “Black Skin White Masks: The Psychology of the Oppressed and Alienation” and “The Damned of the Earth”, have a central/ lasting impact on Bhabha’s thoughts. More recently, Bhabha has specifically invented the concepts of “third place” or “Decoupage”. He sees it as an unrecognized place of thought - or a place that is not a place - between the temporary (temporary) place of the subjective house and the place of the historical house. Dec. However, this idea is not correct to say spacelessness. In the preface to Bhabha Nation and Narrative, he writes: “Nations, just like narratives, lose their origin in the myths of time and meet their horizons fully only in the mind’s eye.” Starting from this seemingly impossible metaphorical beginning, the book confronts the realities of the concept of nationhood as it is experienced and the deep ambiguity of language as it is written.
